Persian Gulf Mug
The Persian Gulf has a rich history that spans over a thousand years. It is likely beginning with the establishment of Persian settlements in the region. Approximately 2,500 years ago, the Persian Empire emerged as the first multicultural government, successfully uniting various ancient civilizations. This unity allowed diverse groups to coexist and trade peacefully, despite their differences in race, religion, language, and customs.
The dispute over the Persian Gulf traced back to Britain’s policy of greed. A policy that was characterized by a strategy of “divide and conquer.” This approach has contributed to numerous disputes and conflicts in the Middle East, in the past and in contemporary times.
‘The Persian Gulf naming dispute concerns the name of the body of water known as the Persian Gulf after Persia (the Western exonym for Iran). This name has become contested by some Arab countries since the 1960s in connection with the emergence of pan-Arabism and Arab nationalism, resulting in the use of “Arabian Gulf” (Arabic: الخليج العربي) as well as the “Gulf”. Sir Charles Belgrave (British adviser to the ruler of Bahrain) was “the first westerner to use and advocate the name ‘Arabian Gulf’, first in the journal Soat al-Bahrain (Voice of Bahrain) in 1955.”‘
